Anne, the American Girl
This book was simply fun to write and it was done while writing a serious nonfiction book. Fiction is a great change of pace. Anne is a Chinese girl who comes to America when she's very young. The setting is just prior to World War II San Francisco and after Pearl Harbor, no city in the country was more affected. For the duration of the war, anyone who looked Asian was watched and there were an awful lot of Chinese in San Francisco at the time. Anne falls in love with a man of Irish ancestry old enough to be her father. This beautiful man inherits a depressed railroad business from his father, but he is aware enough to realize that war was coming and that the rail business would boom again. He also knew uniforms and such would be needed in large quantities. He knows where cheap labor can be found--the same place he found Anne.
